What is Osteopathy?
Osteopathy is a hands-on approach to healthcare that focuses on how the body’s structure and function work together. It looks at muscles, joints, fascia, posture, movement habits, lifestyle, and the nervous system — rather than treating pain as an isolated problem.
David Brisson D.O. offers personalised osteopathic care in Tokyo and Yokosuka for people dealing with pain, stiffness, posture problems, sports injuries, and movement restrictions.
A Whole-Body Approach
Osteopathy is based on the idea that the body works as a connected whole. Pain in one area may be influenced by posture, old injuries, stress, work habits, sports training, or restricted movement elsewhere in the body.
An osteopathic consultation looks beyond the painful area to understand how the body is compensating, where movement is restricted, and what may be contributing to the problem. The goal is to reduce unnecessary tension, improve mobility, support recovery, and help you move more comfortably.
Common Reasons People Visit an Osteopath
- Back pain
- Neck pain
- Sciatica
- Joint stiffness
- Tension-related headaches
- TMJ / jaw tension
- Sports injuries
- Repetitive strain
- Posture-related discomfort
- Pregnancy and postpartum musculoskeletal discomfort
- General stiffness, fatigue, and restricted movement
Please note: Osteopathy is not a substitute for urgent medical care. If you have severe or sudden symptoms, unexplained weight loss, fever, numbness, loss of strength, trauma, chest pain, or symptoms that are worsening, please seek medical advice promptly.
What Happens During a Session?
Your first session begins with a conversation about your symptoms, medical history, lifestyle, work habits, sports activity, stress, and health goals. David then performs a physical assessment to understand posture, mobility, areas of restriction, and how different parts of the body may be affecting each other.
Treatment is personalised. Depending on your body and comfort level, David may use soft-tissue work, stretching, joint mobilisation, structural adjustment, functional techniques, craniosacral work, biodynamic approaches, or a combination of methods. First visits usually last around 30 to 60 minutes.
David’s Approach
David Brisson D.O. is a French-trained osteopath based in Tokyo since 2010. His approach combines traditional osteopathic principles with a broad range of techniques adapted to each patient.
He works with international residents, Japanese patients, athletes, dancers, office workers, pregnant and postpartum patients, and people who want a more personalised approach to pain, posture, and movement. Treatment is always adapted to your needs, preferences, comfort level, and goals.
Osteopathy vs Chiropractic
Osteopathy and chiropractic both use hands-on techniques and may help with back pain, neck pain, joint stiffness, and movement problems. The difference is usually in the assessment and treatment style.
Chiropractic care often focuses strongly on spinal alignment and joint adjustment. Osteopathy usually takes a broader whole-body approach, looking at muscles, joints, fascia, posture, lifestyle, movement patterns, and how different parts of the body may be compensating for each other.
David’s approach may include structural adjustment where appropriate, but it is not limited to adjustment. Each session is adapted to your body, symptoms, and comfort level.
Is Osteopathy Right for Me?
Osteopathy may be suitable if you are looking for hands-on care for pain, stiffness, posture-related discomfort, sports recovery, or restricted movement.
It may also be helpful if you have tried standard approaches but still feel that your body is not moving well, or if you want someone to look at how different parts of your body are working together. If David thinks your symptoms require medical investigation, he will advise you to consult an appropriate medical professional.
